Rebecca Flavell - Learner of the Year 2005

Rebecca Flavell. Originally from Wednesfield, West Midlands, Rebecca visited mid-Wales on holiday when she was 15. As a result, Rebecca decided to move to Llanbynmair and found part-time work in the chicken factory in Carno.

With no formal qualifications, Rebecca approached Powys Training’s Machynlleth centre with the aim of gaining an Administration qualification to improve her employment prospects.

She joined the successful Skill Build programme on a work placement at Anderson Apparel Ltd in Llanbrynmair, during which time she achieved key skill qualifications in I.T., Problem Solving, Working With Others, Improving Own Learning and Administration Level 1 and also attended a 3-day motivational programme. The training was funded by ELWa, part funded by the European Social Fund through the Welsh Assembly Government.

Christine Anderson, herself no stranger to receiving awards being ‘Welsh Business Woman Of The Year’ in 1996, owner of the mid Wales based company which designs and manufactures garments for high profile London based clients, was very impressed with Rebecca’s attitude and commitment to learning and decided to nominate her for the Learner of the Year award.

In nominating Rebecca, Christine commented “the convenience of training in Machynlleth and the flexibility of gaining work experience at the same time meant that Rebecca had the best of both and she pointed out that whilst at school in Wolverhampton she could not have dreamt that these things would fall into place so quickly”.

Rebecca is now studying for an NVQ in Garment Design and Technology.
