Modern Apprenticeship Helps Emyr Change Career

Emyr Chilcott.A young South Powys man has shown that changing career path is possible if you are prepared to retrain.

Emyr Chilcott, 23, of Abercraf, near Ystradgynlais, wanted to work in a garage when he left school and went on to achieve a Modern Apprenticeship (MA) in motor vehicle body repair.

But after a few years of working in the body shop at a local Ford garage, he decided to look for a career with more variety and set out on a second MA in wood occupations working as a carpenter for his father, Winston, who runs a local building firm.

He has now completed the MA, having attended college one day a week at Llansamlet, and hopes to progress to a building inspector's qualification. His training was delivered jointly by Powys Training's Ystradgynlais centre and Neath and Port Talbot College on behalf of post-16 education and training body ELWa.

"After a few years of working in the body shop, I fancied a change to find a job with more prospects," explained Emyr. "In my current job I do a bit of everything which is a lot more interesting.

"I think training is very important to improve your career prospects and I want to carry on and get a building inspector's qualification. Whatever happens in the future, I will still have the vehicle body repair qualification to my name."

He urged anyone thinking of changing career to research what training support was available and then go for it.

Anne Harries, Emyr's training officer at Powys Training, praised his dedication and commitment in achieving a second Modern Apprenticeship.

ELWa Modern Apprenticeships are available to individuals of all ages who are employed and want to train. There are more than 90 different MA courses in Wales that provide a pathway to employment.
