Training Pays Off As Young Mum Finds Work

Angela DochertyTraining is paying off for young mum Angela Docherty who has landed a part-time job after boosting her computer and communication skills.

By her own admission, Angela, 22, who lives in Llandrindod Wells, didn't do very well in her GCSEs and was keen to improve her skills and confidence to find a job.

In a bid to build a career, she enrolled with Powys Training in Llandrindod Wells to gain computer qualifications and completed a 13-week Skillbuild programme for adults funded by post-16 education and training body ELWa.

Having achieved Keyskills and the New Clait qualifications, she hopes to obtain a European Computer Driving Licence by the end of the month. She has also benefited from motivational training to boost her self-esteem and confidence when applying for employment.

The training has paid off because she has secured a part-time job as an administrative assistant with Powys Challenge in Llandrindod Wells after impressing the organisation with her eagerness to learn.

Douglas Cooper, a training officer with Powys Training in Llandrindod Wells, said it had been pleasing to watch Angela develop during her training.

"She was always very bubbly but she has noticeably developed since she started training and she is now much more focused about what she wants to achieve in her life," he added.

"She is living proof that having a child does not in any way hold a person back from pursuing a career."

Angela, who is originally from Brighton, is delighted to have found a job that she enjoys and is looking forward to developing a career. "I didn't do very well in my GCSEs and I couldn't go straight into work because I had a baby son, who will be two in December," she said.

"The training has given me the skills and confidence to go for a job, which is very intimidating. I enjoy the job so much and it's great to be meeting people and getting on rather than being stuck in a rut."
