Powys Training

Powys Training is a self-financing organisation within Powys County Council and has been established since September 1988. The General Manager, Aprille Saunders, reports directly to Powys County Council Human Resources Department.

It was awarded ‘Investors In People’ accreditation in 1993 and has been successfully re-accredited at each subsequent inspection.

Powys is the most rural and also the largest county in Wales and transport links are still a major concern resulting in some learners having considerable journeys to travel to undertake their vocational training. To address this issue Powys Training operates from the six major towns of: Brecon, Llandrindod Wells, Machynlleth, Newtown, Welshpool and Ystradgynlais.

These learning centres provide services that offer employed and non employed learners the opportunity to develop their skills through a variety of programmes including: Apprenticeships at level 2 and level 3 and Modern Skills Diplomas at level 4, which specialise in occupational routes including;

Business & Administration, Information Technology Qualification (ITQ), Accounting (AAT), Children’s Care, Learning and Development, Health and Social Care, Team Leading, Management, Construction, Electrical Engineering, and Motor Vehicle Maintenance.

Powys Training is well respected for their work in the development of young people within Powys through the Skill Build programme. These young people have the opportunity to experience real work situations so that they will have a stronger sense of their place as a member of the local community, the Welsh nation and a global citizen as identified in “Wales, Europe and the World”, and increase their level of Key and Basic Skills by using the Internet to research other cultures.

Computer training is still in great demand in all walks of life, and Powys Training’s courses include New CLAiT, CLAiT Plus, and the European Computer Driving Licence (ECDL), and Microsoft Office courses in Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint, and these are tailored to the unique needs of people, businesses and the community.

Powys Training is actively involved in the delivery of a variety of training to Powys County Council staff, including business courses, Institute of Customer Service Awards, the European Computer Driving Licence, and Basic Skills support in line with their Employer Pledge.

Business courses are available to support staff development, including one-day courses in Assertiveness, Written Communication, Effective Meetings, Minute Taking, Time Management and Interview Skills. Additionally, accredited certificates are available in Business & Administration, Customer Service and Children’s Care, Learning and Development.

ICT services provide help and support with many aspects of ICT, networking and computer infrastructure, including database design and support, small network/server advice, and support and advice on selecting computer systems/software for small businesses.

Staff ensure easy interaction with learners and local employers, based on a thorough knowledge and understanding of the areas in which they work and the requirements of the local community.

Powys Training is accredited to deliver a wide range of NVQs, Technical Certificates, Key Skills and Literacy and Numeracy qualifications.

Powys Training work closely with preferred Delivery Partners to increase the number of learning opportunities available to our learners as a vital part of the delivery mechanism for wider learner participation within rural Mid Wales.
